A regional information network was established among 4 South Asian
nations, namely, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and India through South Asian
Sub Regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) in order to ensure broadband
information communication, exchange information related knowledge and
access to ICT in inaccessible areas. With a view to enhancing the prevailing
regional connectivity, activities in the second phase are underway. In this
process, South Asian Sub Regional Economic Cooperation (SASEC)
Information Highway will be established at a cost of Tk. 29.40 crore.
Internal connectivity

• Capacity has been created to provide 44500 ADSL (Asymmetric Digital
Subscriber Line) connections in 26 districts, of which 5650 connections
have already been provided. New capacity for another 3390 ADSL
connections will be created in addition to the existing capacity within June
2011 through the Internet Information Network Expansion project.
• Capacity to provide 1000 DDN (Digital Data Network) connections in 41
districts has been created, of which 425 connections are already in use.
• A special initiative has been taken up to create an open access Data
Transmission Network countrywide at a reasonable cost using PGCB’s fiber
optic line under PPP.
• Laying of a total of 1450 km optical fibre network in addition to existing
3200 km in 37 districts is currently underway under Info-Bahon project.
• For the expansion of internet facilities, ‘Development of Optical Fibre
Network in 1000 Union Parishads’ and ‘Establishment of Wireless
Broadband Network using WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access) technology for ‘Digital Bangladesh’ projects have been
proposed.
• Internet bandwidth charges for submarine cable (in Wet segments) were
reduced twice, first in August 2009 by 10 percent and then again in January
2011 by another 10 percent, to encourage increased use of internet and make
it more affordable. Besides, bandwidth price at the IG level has been
gradually reduced from Tk. 27,000 to Tk. 12,000.
